COCHRANE PILATES WITH LISA

Why Did I Choose Pilates?

I started Pilates in 2015 while recovering from a back injury. After recieving clearance from my physio therapist I wanted to continue strengthening my back to counteract long hours of sitting at my office job as an accountant. I had always been relatively active, I'd played rugby for a number of years, so I wasn't afraid to work hard... but I wanted a more wholistic approach that wouldn't require long hours in a gym to get results. Something kinder, gentler and more sustainable that I could do for the rest of my life, providing challenge that also incorporated mind, body, and breath.

What began as a six-week intro program quickly became a dedicated practice. I immediately noticed improvements in my strength and mobility, gaining a renewed sense of trust in my body’s ability to move without fear. As a student, I learned how small changes in alignment could make movement feel easeful rather than restrictive. My curiosity about the Pilates Method grew, fueled by exceptional teachers who showed me how effective this system can be.

In 2022, I enrolled in a 600-hour Comprehensive Classical Teacher Training through UP University of Pilates, becoming a nationally certified instructor in 2023. I remain committed to the classical lineage, regularly attending advanced workshops and conferences to deepen my expertise.

Today, I teach private and small-group sessions in my boutique home studio, which is fully equipped with professional classical apparatus. I work with a diverse range of clients, from those returning to exercise to athletes focused on stability and efficient movement.

I teach Pilates as a holistic, corrective system—just as Joseph Pilates intended. By emphasizing breath, precision, and mindful control, I help clients build awareness and find new connections within their bodies. With regular practice, the method develops the strength, balance, and confidence needed to support a high quality of life for years to come.

FAQs For Pilates in Cochrane

  • What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, originally called Contrology. The method is designed to correct muscular imbalances, improve posture, and support efficient, pain-free movement.

Pilates combines strength and flexibility with control and precision. The release of unnecessary tension alongside balanced strength creates more ease in the body, increases range of motion, and can help reduce discomfort. With regular practice, Pilates supports overall fitness, mobility, posture, and well-being.

  • How is Pilates different from other forms of exercise?

Pilates differs from many forms of exercise in both its use of specialized equipment and its emphasis on quality of movement. The springs used on the apparatus provide supportive resistance, allowing exercises to be both strengthening and joint-friendly.

Equally important is the focus on precision, breath, and awareness. Rather than rushing through repetitions, Pilates encourages mindful movement initiated from the deep stabilizing muscles of the core. This approach supports the bones and joints properly and helps create healthier, more efficient movement patterns over time.

  • What are the benefits of Pilates?

    The benefits of Pilates include:

    Improved core awareness and strength

    • Increased flexibility and mobility
    • Better posture and alignment
    • Relief from back pain and joint discomfort
    • Improved balance and coordination
    • Enhanced breathing and body awareness

Over time, Pilates supports efficient movement, physical resilience, and long-term vitality.

  • Who can do Pilates?

Pilates is for every body. It can be practiced regardless of age, fitness level, gender, or body type, and all exercises can be modified to meet you where you are.

Pilates can be especially helpful if you:

    • Experience low back or joint pain
    • Spend long hours sitting or dealing with postural strain
    • Are an athlete or active adult looking to improve performance and prevent injury

As the saying goes, “Life happens — Pilates helps.” Pilates provides just the right balance of physical and mental challenge to restore physical vibrancy, revitalize the mind, and lift the spirit.

  • What is the difference between Classical Pilates and other forms of Pilates?

Classical Pilates follows the original method and order developed by Joseph Pilates. As a classically trained instructor, I adhere to this structured system, performed on authentic equipment.

The exercises are taught in a specific, sequential order and emphasize precision, control, breath, and fluid movement. This approach builds core strength and “powerhouse” connection while preserving the integrity and effectiveness of the method as it was originally intended.

  • How often should I do Pilates?

Pilates is meant to be an ongoing practice. Because it works the whole body each session and focuses on quality rather than quantity, it can be practiced regularly without overworking specific areas.

For meaningful and lasting change, practicing two to three times per week is recommended. With consistent practice, you’ll notice improvements in posture, balance, strength, flexibility, and overall movement efficiency as awareness and muscle memory develop.

  • What is the Contrology Gym?

The Contrology Gym operates in the same way Joseph Pilates ran his original studio. Clients follow an individualized program at their own pace, with access to all of the classical Contrology (Balanced Body) equipment and guidance from a trained instructor.

This format allows for consistent practice, faster progress, and a deeper understanding of the method. Pre-approval is required, as participants should have a basic understanding of the Pilates repertoire on both the mat and reformer.

  • Should I do mat work or apparatus work?

This is not an either/or question. Joseph Pilates designed the method as a complete system, with both mat and apparatus (equipment) supporting one another.

In my studio, as a student of classical Pilates, you will learn the repertoire on both the mat and the reformer and, as appropriate, progress to other pieces of equipment such as the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Pedipull, Spine Corrector, and Foot Corrector. Each apparatus offers unique feedback and support, helping you make new connections and access movement in different ways.

Using high-quality equipment is essential in this process. My studio is equipped with professional, authentic classical equipment by Contrology. This equipment will help teach you too, as it was designed according to the original pieces made by Joseph Pilates. The dimensions and springs support and challenge you, allowing the method to be practiced as it was intended

  • Can I do Pilates if I have an injury?

Yes, as long as you are not in acute pain. Sessions are adapted to your needs and paced appropriately, focusing on strengthening what may be under-supported and releasing areas that tend to overwork. Pilates looks at the whole body, helping restore balance and coordination rather than focusing only on symptoms.

  • What should I bring / wear?

Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable workout clothing without zippers or metal hardware, as these can damage the equipment. Socks are required for hygiene and safety — grip socks are recommended to help you feel stable during your session and are available for use in the studio.

  • New to Pilates in Cochrane?

If you’re new to Pilates, you’re in the right place. Pilates is not about keeping up or pushing through discomfort — it’s about learning how to move with awareness, support, and control.

Your first sessions will focus on understanding the fundamentals of the method, including breath, alignment, and core connection. Movements are introduced gradually and tailored to your body, your experience, and your goals.

Whether you’re returning to movement after time away, managing aches or stiffness, or simply looking for a more sustainable way to build strength and mobility, Pilates offers a calm, supportive path forward. No prior experience is required — just a willingness to move thoughtfully and at your own pace.
